Flow State
/flō stāt/ (n.) The psychological experience described as taking action with a complete and total focus in the present moment enabling the mind to function at its peak. An individual loses track of time and becomes absorbed in the process when experiencing a state of flow.
The Studio
Established in 2019 by artist Devin Mullane, Flow State Art Studio was created as a space to explore the dichotomy between perceptible and abstract artwork and uses a laser cutting machine to cut and engrave materials like wood and paper to achieve complete and precise control over the results as well as various techniques known as acrylic paint pouring to produce stunning original paintings by simply “going with the flow”.
The Studio (based in Columbus, Ohio) prides itself on artistry and craftsmanship and is focused on producing visually appealing artwork by using high quality, archival materials designed to last.
All artwork produced by Flow State Art Studio is made available for purchase in limited quantities, numbered and signed by the artist including Giclée (digital) prints of original paintings. Note, the frames encasing artwork sold by Flow State Art Studio are custom made and finished by the artist as well.
The Artist
Hey! I’m Devin and it’s a pleasure to meet you. I’d like to thank you for visiting Flow State Art Studio!
Inspiration for my art
Growing up in a small town called Oscoda in northeast Michigan, I spent a lot of time outside swimming in lakes, canoeing in rivers and exploring the woods. Nature’s left a lasting impression on me so as an artist I draw a lot of my inspiration from the natural world we live in, which can be seen in the patterns, symbolism and color combinations used in my artwork.
I’m also drawn to minimalistic designs, clean lines and often like to incorporate negative space in my artwork to add an element of depth and dimension as well.
Lastly, the words, quotes, phrases or sayings I choose to laser cut are ones that have resonated with me and inspired me over the years. I hope they do the same for you.
Inspiration to become an artist
I’m fortunate to have several creative types in my family who inspired and encouraged me to explore my artistic side growing up and my Mom, Diana Mullane, was no exception. She was an incredibly talented artist capable of creating artwork through multiple mediums although water color paintings became her preference. The example she set for me was one that I’m grateful for: be yourself and do what makes you happy. She was my inspiration to become an artist.
Sadly, Diana was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and slowly stopped creating artwork as her health declined. She passed away in January 2021 at the age of 74, which brings us to…
The Mission
The National Institute on Aging describes Alzheimer’s disease as “an irreversible, progressive brain disorder that slowly destroys memory and thinking skills, and, eventually, the ability to carry out the simplest tasks”. The Alzheimer’s Association estimates there are more than 5 million Americans living with the disease today and that number is growing; 1 in 3 seniors now dies with Alzheimer’s or another type of dementia and it’s become the 6th leading cause of death in the U.S., taking more lives than breast cancer and prostate cancer combined.
Watching Alzheimer’s disease slowly take a loved one is devastating and unfortunately, these statistics mean there are many more of you out there experiencing that devastation. My heart goes out to your loved ones going through a decline and all of you who are doing your best to take care of them.
Flow State Art Studio’s mission is to help create a world without Alzheimer’s so when you purchase artwork from Flow State Art Studio, 10% of the profits are donated to help find a cure.
This isn’t just art; this is art with a purpose. This is art for Alzheimer’s.
